Your questions

Below we answer some of the most frequent questions about the features of PlagScan.
Please also have a look at the comparison of PlagScan account types.
1. Plagiarism analysis 2. Data protection
3. Organizations version 4. Technical issues

1. Plagiarism analysis

How does Plagscan indicate plagiarism? What kind of reports can I receive?
The particular feature of PlagScan is, that it marks directly in the text, where plagiarism might have occurred (by employing the commenting function of Microsoft Word, see picture). You may view this report directly in the browser as well as download an analyzed copy of the original document in .docx format (currently this option is only available for documents with less than 2MB and no more than 100.000 words).
Additionally, you get a summary of plagiarism hits, which lists sources and a number of identicalness between source and document.
Does PlagScan check for documents other than the internet? Does it account for collusion?
Besides the internet, PlagScan does also search internal databases for possible plagiarism. Those databases are established by the user, i.e. documents he has uploaded, organizationally wide enabled document as well as documents voluntarily added to the PlagScan data base by all PlagScan users.
Can I upload several documents at once?
If you have installed and activated flash for your browser, you can comfortably upload several documents, by keeping the CTRL-Key pressed while clicking the documents. Further you can upload .zip-archives. Documents within this archive will autmoatically be labeled according to the .zip-archives name. In order to see those labels activate the advanced user interface within the settings.
Can I check several documents in parallel?
Yes, without any problems. Simply select your desired documents and press check on the right upper corner. You may for example select all documents with the same label at once. Your documents will always also be checked among themselves - keyword: collusion. For uploads of several documents, PlagScan waits before the first analysis until each single document is completely available in the data base.
Will the analysis of my documents continue, when I close my internet browser?
Yes, analyses continue on the server. If you have activated the email notification option, you are automatically informed about the results upon execution.
Isn't your service just same, if I enter several words at Google/Yahoo to find plagiarism?
No! PlagScan offers far more than that. Over and above Google we do also check with internal databases, in particular everything you provide yourself. We do also find parts of sentences and provide a quick and systematic check of whole documents, not only those being suspicious, for example due to obvious change in style.
Can I check different versions of a document?
Yes, but you should either adjust your data policy within the settings, in order to only check for web sources. Or you delete any older version of the document, since otherwise it will be listed as a possible source. This would lead to plenty of plagiarism detections and a confusing report.

2. Data protection

Who has access to my PlagScan documents?
First things first: Your documents do NOT exist in the internet, after you uploaded them at PlagScan. You may voluntarily decide to share your documents either with users from your organization or even all PlagScan users (both is deactivated by default). Sharing also does NOT mean, that others can read your documents. If now another PlagScan user does find a potential plagiarism of your document the source is not automatically revealed. Rather a form can be sent to you, according to which you decide, whether to contact each other or not. Finally, even the global PlagScan database is not shared with anybody outside of PlagScan. Find the different data policies in the following table:
Internet user data base organization data base PlagScan data base
Compare to web sources only x
Check against my documents x x
Share with my organization x x x
Participate in PlagScan database x x x x

Can I accidentally plagiarize myself?
The only entity of your document is the one, you uploaded yourself. As soon as you delete a document naturally no plagiarism check may be conducted with it anymore. The only possibility to plagiarize yourself based on using PlagScan is, if you upload a document (or slightly modified versions of it) several times.
Does PlagScan employ a save data transfer?
PlagScan does use encrypted document transfer (128/256bit SSL via https) for maximal security. If you like to activate encryption prior to logging in, select https://www.plagscan.com. Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is the protocol, which enables this save data transfer via the internet. The SSL protocol makes sure, that sensitive data, such as credit card information during online shopping, are not read or manipulated. Further it does constitute the identity of an internet page. Many browsers such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Chrome and others support this system. This secure connection is indicated by a lock icon within your browser, which you will find on different positions depending on the browser.
What do you do with my personal data?
Your personal data is neither sold or passed on to anybody by PlagScan or our business associates.

3. Organizations version

Does an organization get an individual access to PlagScan?
The plagiarism check portal is the personal access site of your organization to PlagScan. Here the administrator can display messages, Being equipped with personalized codes from organization users, third party (students/ authors) may check documents for themselves or upload them to organization user accounts (for a detailed explanation see the following questions).
How can we add a whole bunch of users at the same time?
PlagScan allows to enter several organization users at the same time. If you have a user table in digital form, you can upload it comfortably via a table file (.csv, .xls, .xlsx, .ods from MS Excel and other spreadsheet programs).
May third parties (students/ authors) directly upload their documents?.
Organisation users can create courseworks with deadlines and receive a submission code in turn. With this code third parties can upload their documents directly through the plagiarism portal to the user's account. The organization user is able to set the label those documents should be labeled with upon creation of the code, in order to keep track of the uploads.
Which organizations already use PlagScan as plagiarism checker?
In succession you find an excerpt of organizations searching for plagiarism with PlagScan.

4. Technical issues

Does PlagScan allow us to integrate its functionality in our Software (e.g. Teaching/Learning management systems)?
PlagScan does provide an Application Programming Interface (API), which allows the integration of all its functionality in existing systems (see scheme to the right).
An example: After the student submits a document, analysis takes place in the background. When the teacher accesses the paper for marking, the annotated version is already there. That way possible plagiarism can already be considered during the first proof reading and no extra work is necessary.
Please have a look at our PlagScan API documentation.

I do not have access to Microsoft Word 2007/2010. Is it still possible to work with the .docx-reports?
If you are using an older version of Microsoft Word, consider installing Microsoft's update, making older Word versions fully .docx document compatible.
Is it possible to analyze texts of any language or is it English texts only?
Basically PlagScan can process any language. It does work for any language, which uses the international UTF-8 encoding. This implies, that any texts of languages for example with Latin, Arabic or Cyrillic characters can be checked for plagiarism. For texts in English and German we PlagScan offers optimized routines for plagiarism search.
Document analysis/upload takes far too long, do I have to re-upload the file?
At very high peaks of server load documents may not be processed for quite some time. We apologize in advance and ask you to check back the next day. If you still do not find the job done, please contact us directly.
PlagScan is called an online-service. How does that make it different from classical software products?
In order to use PlagScan you do not need to install it on a computer at hand, but are simply able to use it via a browser and an internet connection. PlagScan is always used in its latest version, while you do not have to install annoying upgrades on your computer. Further, you do not need to install an online-service on each work station of the employees of your organization, but rather you can directly create and delete an user account for him as needed. Together with the potent safety measures we apply, an online-service all around is the more customer friendly solution compared to classical software licenses.
Does PlagScan only find HTML content from websites?
No, PlagScan also searches .pdf and other document files (see next question) which are available online. Optionally, your text is checked against documents in our internal PlagScan database in addition to the online check.
I get documents of all kinds of formats, which I would like to check for plagiarism. Do I have to convert them first to a specific format or is PlagScan capable to work with them?
All popular text formats are supported and can be analyzed by PlagScan, as well as ZIP archives of text documents.
